Biography

Born and raised in Indiana, Fred Hayes comes from a family of many professional musicians and music educators. After moving to Tucson, AZ he became the first graduate of the University of Arizona Jazz Program. After graduation, Fred worked throughout much of the western US with many jazz and pop artists, including Jazz vocalist Dianne Schuur. After a short stint in Los Angeles, he decided to make Tucson his permanent home.

As a drummer for the Tucson Jazz Orchestra, Fred has appeared with Joe Williams, Tommy Newsome, Carla Bley, Slide Hampton, Snooky Young, David “Fathead” Newman, John Clayton and many more. Fred is often called on to accompany national jazz artists performing in Arizona, including Charlie Rouse, Mose Allison, Pete Christlieb, Buddy de Franco, Ernie Watts, Ann Hampton Callaway, Ken Peplowski, Wycliffe Gordon, Tierny Sutton, James Morrison, Bill Watrous, Bud Shank,¬† and many others. He has also worked with legendary entertainers Bob Hope and Steve Allen. Fred has toured internationally in Mexico with Jazzberry Jam as well as other groups.

Current gigs include performances with the Ed Delucia Trio, Tucson Swings, Jeff Haskell, Matt Mitchell, The Tucson Hard Bob Quintet, and many others. Fred also plays the steel drum and leads his own Calypso group, Acero. Fred Hayes is one of the busiest freelance musicians in Arizona, involved  live performances and recording sessions as well as maintaining a full schedule of private students.
